Observations from the Ertveldpolder Den Bosch Planting Site

A monitoring visit was conducted on May 27, 2026, to the planting site known as the Avans-bos (the section planted in 2021 and 2023). The overall assessment indicated that a significant number of the planted trees were found to be well-established. European ash (Fraxinus excelsior), dog-rose (Rosa canina), willow species (Salix spp.) and common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) demonstrated strong growth and establishment across the site. Various types of undergrowth were present throughout the site, including bramble, thistle, and grasses, with vegetation heights ranging from approximately 100 cm to 159 cm. While some trees appeared distant from one another, many were noted for their relative height, often rising above the surrounding vegetation. However, some areas presented a lower density of established trees.

A lot of pollinator activity was observed throughout the site, especially on the dog-rose (Rosa canina) suggesting that the developing woodland is providing valuable habitat resources. In addition, spindle (Euonymus europaeus) shrubs affected by webbing from the spindle ermine caterpillar showed signs of recovery, with the regrowing of new leaves.

The site continues to support a high diversity of thriving species, including:

  • Black alder (Alnus glutinosa)

  • Willow species (Salix spp.)

  • Bird cherry (Prunus padus)

  • Common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

  • Spindle (Euonymus europaeus)

  • Guelder rose (Viburnum opulus)

  • Dog rose (Rosa canina)

  • Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)

  • European ash (Fraxinus excelsior)

The section first planted in 2021 contains taller trees and shows a denser canopy structure than the areas planted more recently. This difference is likely due to the stronger establishment and continued growth of the original planting. In contrast, the newer sections have undergone replanting to replace losses, which is reflected in their lower tree density and smaller average tree size. Continued monitoring will be important over the coming years to evaluate how these replanted areas re-establish.
