Restoring a Former Mining Site in Western Macedonia

A recent visit to a planting site in North-Western Greece revealed promising signs of ecological recovery. Located in a former mining area where soil restoration is notoriously difficult, the plot has shown remarkable progress. A very high percentage of the planted trees have successfully survived, exhibiting healthy growth. Unlike historical restoration attempts in the region that relied solely on a single invasive species like acacia, this project utilized deep soil preparation combined with a diverse selection of native species. The positive outcome has encouraged local site managers to adopt similar biodiverse restoration methods for future reclamation projects in the area.
