A Glimpse into 't Kwekkeltje: Observing Growth in Den Bosch

A recent monitoring visit to the 't Kwekkeltje planting site in Den Bosch, Netherlands, on June 4, 2026, offered insights into the site's development. Observations indicated a strong establishment of the planted species. The site exhibited notable vertical diversity, with several species thriving. Among those identified were Prunus spinosa, Corylus avellana, Sambucus nigra, Fagus sylvatica, Viburnum opulus, Crataegus monogyna, Cornus mas, Prunus padus, and Ilex spp. and birch. The canopy of a nearby older tree provides shade, which may influence the growth patterns of the younger trees at the edges of the plot. Dense undergrowth, including bramble and nettle, has developed alongside the planted trees, making movement through certain areas challenging. This vigorous growth also meant that distinguishing planted trees from naturally regenerated species required careful observation. Despite these aspects, many trees, notably Corylus avellana and Sambucus nigra, have grown tall and wide, contributing to a lush, dense environment.
