Bergse Heide, Municipality of Bergen op Zoom

About the project

Together with the municipality of Bergen op Zoom, the aim is to turn this forest full of non-native trees into a more native forest. This work is key to enhancing biodiversity and restoring the degraded forest ecosystem. By enriching the forest with native species, the forest can be more resilient in the future.

Objective

Transform a forest dominated by non-native timber trees, such as the northern red oak (Quercus rubra), into a more native forest. With our support, the ecosystem will be restored by planting native tree species in the areas where northern red oaks are removed. This will increase biodiversity and create habitat and food sources better suited to local wildlife, including insects, birds, and mammals.

Impact

By supporting this project, you will help restore a degraded forest ecosystem. Planting native species will restore habitats and food sources for wildlife, enhance biodiversity, and store carbon for decades to come. Because the trees are planted on communal land, the increase in forest health and biodiversity will also benefit local communities who use and enjoy the forest for recreation.

Supporting this project means supporting the following SDGs:

  • health
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Climate Action
  • Life on land
