Berlin: Peri‑Urban Community Forestry
About the project
The project focuses on planting and maintaining trees and green spaces throughout the city and its outskirts to reduce urban heat, improve air quality, and manage stormwater. By integrating greenery into public spaces and collaborating with residents, schools, and civic groups, the initiative strengthens connections between people and their urban environment while making city life more comfortable and resilient to climate challenges.
Objective
Mitigate the effects of urban density on citizens’ well‑being by improving local microclimates through community‑driven tree planting and green space management.
Impact
By enhancing green infrastructure and peri‑urban woodlands, the project delivers measurable environmental and social benefits for city residents. Increased green cover contributes to improved air quality, increased carbon sequestration, pleasantly moderate temperatures and better water management during heavy rains. The project strengthens biodiversity within the metropolitan landscape. Over time, the initiative contributes to a healthier, more comfortable city that is more resilient to climate change. Community involvement ensures that local residents, especially students and young people, develop ecological knowledge and connection to nature, fostering a sense of ownership and stewardship. Through collaborative efforts, the initiative helps build more sustainable, liveable neighbourhoods with vibrant green spaces that benefit both people and the planet.
