A Flourishing Fruit Haven at Biesterhof, Nijmegen

On a bright summer day on June 18, 2026, a monitoring visit to the Biesterhof planting site in Nijmegen, Netherlands, revealed a landscape rapidly transforming into a lush, thriving sanctuary. Walking through the site, the progress was undeniable: the rows of young fruit trees stood proud and fully intact, with many specimens already reaching an impressive height of around 200 centimeters. The vast majority of the vegetation is thriving in excellent condition, marking a remarkable milestone as all of the originally planted species have successfully established themselves and are already beginning to bear fruit. The emerging hedge appeared dense and vibrant, showcasing an incredible diversity of at least seven different species. Among them, the Prunus and Salix species stood out particularly, growing exceptionally tall and anchoring the developing green space.

This flourishing success is a testament to both nature's resilience and dedicated human care. While many trees, like the sturdy apples, were already secured by supportive poles, a team of passionate volunteers was actively working on-site during the visit to install additional supports for the Russian prune trees. The grounds reflected meticulous maintenance, with the surrounding grasses kept neatly trimmed to prevent them from overgrowing the young plants. Nature itself seems to be cooperating beautifully, as there were absolutely no signs of animal browsing, offering the perfect, undisturbed environment for the young ecosystem to develop.

The true highlight of the visit, however, proved that Biesterhof is becoming more than just a collection of trees—it is turning into a living, breathing habitat. Tucked safely within the foliage, observers discovered a falcon’s nest housing three young chicks. This unexpected avian family underscores the rapidly growing ecological value of the site, proving that the planting efforts have successfully laid the groundwork for a vibrant, self-sustaining ecosystem.
