Monitoring Visit to Las Rozas Planting Site

A recent monitoring visit was conducted on February 16, 2024, at the Las Rozas Big Citizen planting site, established in 2021. Observations across 22 designated spots offered a detailed look at the site's progress. It was noted that approximately two-thirds of the young trees have successfully established themselves, showing resilience in the challenging environment.

Despite this encouraging establishment, the site has faced setbacks. Primary challenges identified were extended dry conditions, which stressed many young trees, and instances of vandalism, leading to damage or uprooting of some seedlings.

However, several positive developments were also evident. Surviving trees displayed healthy new growth, and in more favorable pockets, ground vegetation was observed beginning to re-establish, marking early stages of land restoration.

During this visit, essential maintenance activities were carried out. These included replacing damaged protective guards, re-staking loosened seedlings to ensure stability, removing encroaching weeds, and applying mulch to help conserve soil moisture. Additional inspections were also conducted in areas affected by vandalism to assess if increased protection measures might be necessary.

Continued observation will be key to guiding further restorative actions and ensuring these young trees are well-supported against future climatic and human-related challenges.
