Monitoring visit in the south of Munich: a promising start
Earlier this month we returned to our planting site near Taufkirchen, just south of Munich, where Life Terra and NVIDIA organised a first joint tree planting event in autumn 2024. One year after planting, we were thrilled to see how well the trees are doing overall.
Some young trees grow inside a fenced area, while others are protected by individual guards. The survival rate lies at a solid range between 90 % and 95 %, which is excellent given the demanding conditions of the site. It lies within the Munich Gravel Plain (Münchner Schotterebene) which is one of Bavaria’s areas most affected by climate change. Being a strategically important but challenging environment for tree growth, we specifically chose a mix of resilient species for this forest restoration project.
Most saplings are showing strong vitality and healthy new shoots. The site has been well maintained over the past year — the grass and other competing vegetation around the trees were cut to reduce competition for light and water. This maintenance work clearly contributes to the strong development we observed.
Of course, every restoration project comes with its challenges. Here, the main issue identified so far is damage caused by field mice, which nibble at the bark near the roots. While the affected number of trees remains small, the situation will continue to be monitored closely.
