A Visit to a Planting Site in Portugal
A recent visit to the 'Waking_Life_Portugal_23/24' planting site provided valuable insights into the progress and challenges faced since the initial planting in November 2023, with replacements done in November 2024. The overall appearance of the site suggests moderate success, with a significant proportion of the planted trees surviving. Maintenance activities, including irrigation and mulching, have been carried out to support the young trees. Interestingly, observations indicate that certain species, including Sambucus nigra, Tamarix africana, Tilia platyphyllos, Ulmus minor and Betula pendula, have experienced higher mortality rates compared to others. Natural regeneration is also evident, and it has been decided to allow this process to continue undisturbed. The site has faced environmental challenges, notably a period of drought, which has undoubtedly impacted the young plants. The visit highlighted the importance of ongoing monitoring and adaptive management strategies for ensuring the long-term success of reforestation efforts.
