Site visit of the Berlin spring 2024 forest restoration project
A visit to our forest restoration project close to Oberbarnim and Strausberg, in the northeast of Berlin, showed a high establishment rate of approximately 90% after the first growing season, indicating that the planting conditions, species selection, and initial maintenance measures were well suited to the site. The trees show good overall vitality and stable root development, with healthy shoot growth visible across most of the area.
The planting mixture form spring 2024 consists of Quercus petraea (sessile oak), Larix decidua (European larch), Cedrus atlantica (Atlas cedar), Corylus colurna (Turkish hazel), and Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas fir). This combination was chosen to enhance species diversity and to improve the stand’s resilience to climatic variations and potential pest pressures.
Overall, the development of the site is progressing in line with expectations. Continued monitoring over the next few years will provide further insight into growth dynamics and species performance. The encouraging first-year results highlight the value of careful site preparation, species selection, and post-planting care in successful forest restoration.
