Boterhuispolder, Warmond: food forest

About the project

Boterhuispolder is currently a sustainable small-scale farm breeding native Dutch Lakenvelder cows, while also being home to a protected bird reserve, coexisting under agri-environmental management. The current landowners, anticipating their retirement, have given the responsibility to a new generation to continue the sustainable use of this polder in their own ways.

The new goal is to create a food sovereign commune, promoting diversity through a food forest and green infrastructure, while moving away from cattle-breeding to focus on the conservation and regeneration of the land in harmony with the already existing biodiversity.

Objective

Enhance biodiversity and soil regeneration by developing a food forest to support the commune's food sovereignty, along with green infrastructure such as pollinator-friendly, cow-proof hedges made of native species.

Impact

By supporting this project, you will help restore degraded land with productive hedges and fruit trees, enhancing ecosystem services in the area. It will improve soil quality, boost water infiltration and biodiversity, store carbon for decades, and increase landscape value. At the same time, it will support an agroecological system that generates food sovereignty for the commune to come, strengthening their local capacity and resilience.

How do we measure this impact?

  • Number of trees planted

  • Number of hectares restored

  • Tons of CO2 eq absorbed

  • Community members involved

  • Students involved

  • Jobs created
