Valley with trees

Castries (Montpellier)

The agroforestry project in Castries (Montpellier), developed in collaboration with Racines de France, continues to expand as part of Life Terra’s long-term commitment to climate-resilient land use. Following successful planting activities in 2025 and 2026, the site is entering a new phase of growth, with additional tree planting planned for the 2026–2027 season.

This project is rooted in the principles of agroforestry, integrating trees into agricultural land to create a more balanced and productive ecosystem. By combining environmental restoration with agricultural use, the initiative contributes to both climate action and local economic resilience.

A key moment in the latest planting phase was the involvement of Carbon Emergente, a company specialising in biochar production. Their contribution added a technical layer to the project, strengthening soil quality and supporting the long-term development of the newly planted trees.

Species selection and adaptation

The species selection for this project follows an agroecological approach, prioritising trees that are well adapted to the Mediterranean climate and local soil conditions. This ensures higher survival rates, better growth performance, and stronger integration into the existing landscape.

This combination of carefully selected species and soil enrichment techniques creates the right conditions for young trees to establish themselves and thrive, even under increasingly variable climate conditions.

Impact

Carbon sequestration: Trees and biochar work together to capture and store carbon both above and below ground.
Soil regeneration: Improved fertility, structure, and water retention contribute to long-term soil health.
Biodiversity enhancement: The integration of diverse species creates habitats and strengthens ecosystem balance.
Economic resilience: Agroforestry diversifies production and reduces vulnerability to market and climate fluctuations.
