Charel&co, Strombeek-Bever

About the project

Charel&Co is a project near Brussels combining affordable housing, ecological restoration, and community building. By supporting the development of Nature-based Solutions, this project will help regenerate the soil and add ecological value to the housing projects, while organically creating shared spaces in the common garden for community building. Soil water infiltration capacity is also a target of this project. Altogether, the key goal of this project is Urban Green Buffering in the face of the urban sprawl and the loss of biodiversity around Brussels.

Location.

Objective

Turn a degraded and exhausted 2500 m2 old horticultural land into a thriving community garden, biodiverse, productive, and water-absorbent.

Impact

By supporting this project, you will help restore degraded land with a multitude of nature-based solutions within a shared community garden. A combination of a Miyawaki, food forest, permaculture garden and biodiverse hedges will enhance ecosystem services in the area. It will improve soil quality, boost water infiltration and biodiversity, store carbon for decades, and increase landscape value.

How do we measure this impact?

  • Number of trees planted

  • Number of hectares restored

  • Tons of CO2 eq absorbed**

  • Community members involved

  • Students involved

  • Jobs created

Supporting this project means supporting the following SDGs:

  • zero hunger
  • health
  • clean water and sanitation
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Life on land
