Twickel, Apeldoorn

About the project

With around 4,500 hectares of land, the Twickel Estate is the biggest estate in the Netherlands. It is located on the eastern border of the country near the village of Delden. The estate’s crowning glory is a moated castle dating from the 15th Century. Most of the estate grounds are open to the public.

Historically, the area was covered in deciduous forests, but most of these trees disappeared in the 1500s. Since then, mainly conifers were planted, predominantly in monocultures, and invasive non-native rhododendron species were introduced to the woods and estate gardens.

In the last few years, the Twickel estate has tried to make its forests more biodiverse and climate-proof by clearing invasive species and planting native deciduous trees instead.

Objective

Woodland restoration, the planting of new forests and the boosting of forest health and (climate) resilience by planting a variety of native species that are suitable for the climate, locality and soil type.

Impact

By supporting this project, you will help support the estate to further increase biodiversity on their agricultural land as well as in their forests. We will be planting traditional hedgerows in between fields and reforesting degraded woodland with a variety of native species.

Supporting this project means supporting the following SDGs:

  • health
  • consumption
  • Climate Action
  • Life on land
