Twickel Estate, Delden

About the project

With around 4,500 hectares of land, the Twickel Estate is the biggest estate in the Netherlands. It is located on the eastern border of the country near the village of Delden. The estate’s crowning glory is a moated castle dating from the 15th Century. Most of the estate grounds are open to the public.

Historically, the area was covered in deciduous forests, but most of these trees disappeared in the 1500s. Since then, mainly conifers were planted, predominantly in monocultures, and invasive non native rhododendron species were introduced to the woods and estate gardens.

Objective

Reintroduce a diverse range of native hedge species to strengthen the biodiversity and structure of wooded banks and hedgerows, creating a thriving and cultural landscape that is biodiverse, productive, and resilient to climate change.

Impact

By supporting this project, you will help restore agricultural and cultural landscape with a diverse hedge cover, enhancing ecosystem services in the area. It will improve soil quality, boost water infiltration and biodiversity, store carbon for decades, and increase landscape value.

Supporting this project means supporting the following SDGs:

  • clean water and sanitation
  • Climate Action
  • Life on land
