Utrecht Natuurlijk

About the project

Eilandsteede, a location of Utrecht Natuurlijk, is an urban farm where nature, education, and community engagement come together. Together with its volunteers and staff, Utrecht Natuurlijk works to bridge the gap between the residents of Utrecht and nature and to educate future generations on the importance of nature within cities. Eilandsteede is now the first of the urban farms of Utrecht to make the first steps towards incorporating biodiversity and agroforestry principles into the urban farm (e.g. foodforest and fodder hedges).

Objective

The project aims to increase the number of hedges and trees in the area, improving both the quality of the animals’ diet and the availability of habitat and food sources for local wildlife such as bees, hedgehogs, and birds. Agroforestry principles are incorporated through features such as fodder hedges for park animals and traditional woven hedges.

In addition, the project seeks to educate visitors, especially children, about the importance of trees, hedges, and agroforestry practices in supporting biodiversity and creating healthier ecosystems within their cities.
