Várvölgy - agroforestry project (Hungary)

About the project

In 2023, we planted with the Perger family for the first time in Hungary; now they are expanding and have a new and attractive plot of 2,000+ m2 available to expand their agroforestry operations.

This area is close to the famous Balaton Lake, and its degradation due to nitrogen and phosphorus runoff is a well-documented environmental challenge. The lake has suffered from eutrophication, a process where an excess of nutrients, primarily from conventional agricultural runoff (like fertilisers and manure) and municipal sewage, fuels explosive growth of algae.

Objective

We will have the opportunity to plant some 500 fruit and nut trees in combination with biodiverse hedges that will act as windbreaks and prevent soil erosion. Positive projects that showcase the importance of healthy soils and the much lower need for fertilisers will help promote the regenerative agriculture movement in Hungary and improve the lake's water quality.

Time frame

We will probably be planting here in April 2026.
