Alihuen, Chile

About the project

Alihuen Farm combines regenerative agriculture, reforestation, and community engagement. Using permaculture and organic farming practices, they are restoring degraded pastureland into native forest ecosystems, with the goal of reconnecting fragmented habitats and improving biodiversity.

The project also involves the local community in their plantings, such as schools and volunteers, as well as national organisations.

About the farm

Alihuen (meaning "Big Tree" in the language of the indigenous Mapuche peoples of Chile) started over more than 20 years ago. Located on the island of Chiloé, it was created by Jeroen (originally from Belgium) and Grecia (from Chiloé). Since then, they have already planted 45,000 native tree species to create a diversity of habitats. This has resulted in the appearance of five pudus, the second smallest species of deer in the world, endemic to this ecosystem and considered at risk of extinction.

Collaboration

In line with our mission to promote environmental action linked to community involvement and ecosystem restoration, Life Terra helps Alihuen Farm gain visibility of their restoration projects.
