Montes de Vigo

Montes de Vigo is a federation comprising 14 communal forest communities (comunidades de montes veciñais en man común) that collectively manage approximately 1,565 hectares—about 17% of Vigo's municipal area. Established in 1996, this organization has been pivotal in promoting sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and social engagement. Their initiatives include the development of recreational parks, archaeological site preservation, and the creation of over 130 km of hiking trails, all aimed at integrating forest spaces into the urban fabric and enhancing the quality of life for the city's residents.

In 2022, we partnered with the Saiáns community, a member of Montes de Vigo, to undertake a reforestation project in the Saiáns area. This initiative focused on planting native broadleaf species, such as oaks and chestnuts, to restore biodiversity and strengthen the forest's resilience against wildfires. The project was part of a broader effort to create a "green belt" around Vigo, enhancing ecological connectivity and providing natural spaces for community recreation and education.
